Seven years from China

DHH returns to China for the first time since 2019 and is staggered by the country's transformation β€” from smoggy, gritty industrial cities to gleaming modern metropolises where diesel engines have been replaced wholesale by EVs. He tours a Xiaomi car factory in Beijing, which he describes as sci-fi levels of automation, and reflects on the pace and ambition of Chinese business culture versus Western stagnation. He acknowledges China's political challenges but argues they are no larger than the West's own problems, and that the West can no longer afford to treat China's rise as abstract or numerical. He closes with a genuine call to action tempered by optimism: the West retains the capacity to compete, but only if it wakes up to what time it is.

China's transformation from industrial laggard to technological leader is now concrete and undeniable β€” the West's only viable response is urgency, not denial or despair.

I've never seen any country change so much, so quickly.

Gone is not just the smog, but the sound of diesel engines too.

The pace, and the expectations that came with it, felt almost as jarring compared with America as America's pace does compared with Europe.

  • 8

I could even imagine plenty of people in stagnating countries like the UK or France who might not be as bothered by one-party rule as they once were, if it meant a booming economy, national giants sprouting everywhere, and a set of safe, clean cities on the ascent.

While China may well be under one-party rule, the competitive intensity in many of its markets is far greater than what we can brag about in the West.

Nearly all the major companies I visited were led by engineers, not MBAs.

What matters is what is, and that's a formidable country producing remarkable products and services at extremely competitive prices.

Don't you dare black pill on what's possible in the West!
